Hi, I’m Dave Musson and I’m the strategic lead for social media at the University of Warwick, which is in Coventry (no, really) in the West Midlands of the UK. Previously I was part of the comms team at Solihull Council, where I was the lead officer for social media, as well doing all the other things necessary of a comms officer, such as churning out releases, fighting off journalists and telling agency salespeople that I don’t have any money to spend.
During my time in local government, I helped transform how Solihull Council used Twitter to engage with residents – particularly during times of crisis – as well as creating official platforms on Facebook and Foursquare. I trained the rest of the comms team on how to use, monitor, plan and evaluate social media and also taught two Mayors how to tweet.
I’ve spoken about social media at the LGComms annual conference and contributed to events such as #10by10WM, #brewcamp, #hyperWM and #commscamp.
